  • Multi agency safeguarding against female genital mutilation (FGM) in schools

    Training Course | Barnardo's

    The aim of this training is to support teachers to develop a whole school approach to FGM.

  • Child Protection Core One

    Training Course | Barnardo's

    This course is aimed at all staff and volunteers (particularly during induction periods) to ensure they understand their role and responsibilities to recognise and respond to children and young people in need or at risk from harm.

  • Safeguarding and Child Protection Core Two

    Training Course | Barnardo's

    This two day course will allow learners to explore the indicators of normal childhood development and be able to recognise the risks; vulnerabilities and protective factors.

  • Child Sexual Exploitation level Two

    This programme will specifically support practitioners to prevent child sexual exploitation (CSE); protect children and young people who are at risk of harm or are abused through sexual exploitation and disrupt and prosecute those who perpetrate this form of abuse.

  • Personal Advisor Training - Child and Adolescent Development

    This course is part of ten full day courses that aim to enhance the skills and learning of Personal Advisers working with young people leaving the Care system. Particularly; the course identifies why child development is important in this regard.

  • Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children

    Training Course | Barnardo's

    This course focuses on the experiences and needs of unaccompanied asylum seeking children and young people as they leave care. It offers legal definitions in relation to UASC; focuses on issues of age assessment and addresses the effect of asylum status on planning with young people. Further; the course recognises and discusses the impact and effects of trauma UASC and looks at the risk of this group being defined as All Rights Exhausted (A.R.E.).

  • Education; Employment and Skills

    Training Course | Barnardo's

    Participants will get to know the responsibilities and duties of services towards young people and learn to understand the issues that young people may face. This course will also deliver to consider disclosure and how this may affect education or training placements or employment. Overall it is aimed to ensure Personal Advisers to get to know their young person and to encourage their aspirations.

  • Mental Health

    Training Course | Barnardo's

    This course will explain CAMHS service thresholds and the range of different mental health issues that young people may face. Possible community and voluntary service provisions are addressed. The need for therapeutic approaches to casework is discussed. Participants will reflect on their own experiences; look at information on the prevalence of mental health issues; review challenging issues to work and look at possible problems in the transition from young person services to adult services. Participants will also learn how to talk through these issues.

  • Offending and Custody

    Training Course | Barnardo's

    This course focuses on care leavers in the criminal justice system with a particular emphasis on the young person perspective when leaving custody. It considers our own and society’s attitudes towards crime and criminal behaviour and looks at what may increase risks for young people. The role of the Personal Adviser with regards to young people in custody and on remand is identified along with their legal entitlements. Participants will focus on their role and those of other professionals. They will consider the impact of custody on mental health and discuss how they can prepare and support young people for release.

  • Partnership Working

    This course considers the rationale for and the importance of partnership working in providing support to care leavers. It considers the need for effective networking skills and explains the nature of the brokering role of the Personal Adviser in accessing services for young people. Participants will look at who makes up their network; the networks that young people have; effective negotiating with services; undertaking challenging conversations involving young people and colleagues form other agencies and resolving issues that may arise.

  • Pathway Planning

    Training Course | Barnardo's

    This course covers the process of Pathway Planning including when they should be done; who should be involved and the legal requirements behind the process. It encourages different approaches to assessment and information gathering. It includes the need for contingency planning and ensuring workers support young people in building aspirations for their future. The eight domains of the Pathway Plan are discussed with a view to ensuring access to as much available support as possible with particular reference to accommodation and education needs of young people.

  • Recording and Communication

    This course recognises the importance of effective recording and why we need to be clear and jargon free. Participants will consider and discuss the need for evidence based recording and look at issues around information sharing. They will also get to discuss how learning styles can affect communication and thus the importance of building good relationships and engaging with young people. Participants will assess their own learning style; the VARK modalities and the Kolb learning cycle in developing an understanding of how we may communicate more effectively. The concept of motivational interviewing is discussed in conjunction with active listening and assertiveness skills.

  • Transition

    This course considers the issues facing young people in their transition from Local Authority care to independence. It looks at the role; skills and responsibilities of the Personal Adviser. It covers young people’s entitlements to support; the ways that young people come in to care and the role of Corporate Parents. Participants will consider the young person perspective on what support they require; the legislation affecting their transition and hearing the voice of the young person in decision making. It also considers the particular challenges that may face young people and how we can support them to make a success of independence.

  • Personal Advisor Training – Accommodation and Life Skills

    This course is part of ten full day courses that aim to enhance the skills and learning of Personal Advisers working with young People leaving the Care system. Particularly; this programme aids participants to explore their own experience of their first home and reflect on how this may differ for a young person leaving care.

  • National FGM Centre’s Train-the-trainer

    Training Course | Barnardo's

    Training to enable delegates to deliver the Centre’s accredited FGM training. Greater understanding about FGM; the law and safeguarding implications for professionals. Increased confidence about how to engage with parents; girls and communities regarding FGM. Multi-disciplinary action plan developed. Confidence to deliver the National FGM Centre’s CPD advance training.

  • National FGM Centre - Risk Assessing FGM for Social Worker

    The training is intended to equip social workers with the understanding and skills to use the National FGM Centre’s FGM Risk Assessment Matrix (RAM).

  • Assessing the impact of Neglect on children and using the Graded Care Profile to enhance assessment and intervention

    This one day course will ensure participants understand the nature and potential impact of neglect on children. They will build on their ability to identify neglect and to respond appropriately. They will have the opportunity to apply assessment tools including the Graded Care profile to assessments in order to gain a detailed understanding of the child’s circumstances and lived experience.

  • Safeguarding for Senior; Designated & Operational Managers

    This is a one day course for operational managers in Birmingham to enhance their knowledge and skills of working together to safeguard children in line with the guidance and best practice drives outlined by the Birmingham Safeguarding Children’s Board. Throughout the day; the participants are invited to reflect about their own work settings in terms of assets vs. gaps when safeguarding children and though discussions and activities; the participants will contribute towards a safe culture and practice in Birmingham.
