Organisation Description

The University of Manchester was the first and most eminent of the civic universities, furthering the frontiers of knowledge through research and teaching, but also contributing to the well-being of its region and society more widely. These aims have guided the institution ever since and continue to drive our strategic vision.

CPD Courses and Workshops Available

  • Practical skills for Data Analysis

Training Course | University of Manchester

This course will show participants how to use statistical analysis software (SPSS). In the course participants will be introduced to the SPSS environment as well as useful key concepts (such as cases; variables; values and levels of measurement) to perform basic descriptive data analysis. A key component of the course involves getting familiar with basic data analysis commands in hands-on sessions. By the end of the day participants will be familiar with the software; know how to open a data file; enter data and do basic data manipulations; be able to produce simple descriptive statistics; one- and two-way tables; as well as simple graphs.

  • Social Media Data Analysis

Training Course | University of Manchester

This course describes how to use free Windows software Mozdeh to gather tweets and to download comments on YouTube videos. The course will also describe simple methods to gain insights into the meaning of the downloaded texts and to identify patterns within the data.

  • Introduction to Cluster Analysis

Training Course | University of Manchester

The course covers cluster analysis concepts and methods in SPSS. It is aimed at those with an interest in developing practical skills to implement clustering techniques and those with an interest.

  • Introduction to STATA

Training Course | University of Manchester

The course provides an introductory training in Stata; a statistical package increasingly used for social research data analysis which has powerful data manipulation procedures and extensive and powerful statistical capabilities.

  • Introduction to Data Analysis 2

Training Course | University of Manchester

This course provides an introduction to the theory and methods of quantitative data analysis of relationships between variables; focussing on the techniques of Chi-square tests; correlation and linear regression.

  • NVivo for Qualitative Data Analysis

Training Course | University of Manchester

This course introduces NVivo for data management. Those attending the training session will have access to data sets for practical sessions and can also bring their own data to use in the practical parts of the session. Among the techniques we teach are: coding; adding attributes; queries; models; and charts. The various uses of NVivo will be presented and discussed. Included will be working in teams; adding in notes; importing files; and using NVivo for managing literature. Examples of qualitative and mixed methods research will be presented to showcase how NVivo.

  • Introduction to Sequence Analysis

Training Course | University of Manchester

Sequence analysis has recently experienced increasing interest in life course research and summarizes a variety of techniques to analyse whole “sequences”; for example; employment or partnership histories. The interest; hereby; is not only to describe and visualize whole sequences; but also to compare and regroup similar sequences into clusters; which in turn can be used within other methods (e.g. as independent variable in regression analyses). The course provides a basic introduction into sequence analysis; including its theoretical implication within life course research; and the practical skills required to conduct sequences analysis with Stata.
