Identifying and supporting speech; language & communication needs (SLCN) in the EYFS- Level 1; A 2.5 day training course for practitioners working in the Early Years Foundation Stage. Through a range of interactive learning activities; delegates will develop an understanding of typical speech and language development in children of 0-5 years and be able to identify children with possible difficulties in understanding and using language. During the course; practitioners will reflect on the wider impact of speech and language difficulties; explore strategies and activities that can be used in pre-school settings to influence language development and discuss how this is relevant to families who have English as an Additional Language (EAL).

Signing and Down syndrome

This course details why it is so important to use visual forms of communication with children who have Down syndrome. Speech assisted signing makes speech visual .The course includes 300 everyday signs over two 2 hour sessions. Session 1 covers why we use signing with children with Down syndrome; the BSL alphabet and the signs for manners; animals; food; family and other people. Session 2 covers signs for the home; school day; colours; descriptions; time/days and questions. Followed by a discussion on how behaviour can be addressed through signing. Both sessions include practise of useful phrases and familiar children’s songs.
