Remit of The CPD Certification Service

Most professional bodies will publish a CPD requirements plan for their members, typically in the form of CPD hours or points. Generally, however, they will not be prescriptive as to the topics required as the onus for professional further learning is left in the hands of each individual.

Employers, on the other hand, may often take a more defined approach to skills enhancement within their particular business. Neither group will tend to evaluate or dictate the quality of proposed learning materials. The CPD Certification Service provides an established and practical solution through a rigorous and impartial assessment process which has been leading the way for years.

The CPD Certification Service is a key driving force of Continuing Professional Development across the world, and with members in over 100 countries and growing, it is increasingly becoming known as the international organisation for Continuing Professional Development.

Background / History of CPD

The concept of CPD can broadly trace its roots to the decades following World War II when institutional bodies identified a need for structured further learning post formal qualification. Up until this point, it had largely been assumed that qualified professionals would identify and initiate their knowledge enhancement requirements on a casual or voluntary basis.

However, in an increasingly litigious and technologically advancing business and professional environment, the need became apparent for a more disciplined and structured approach to further learning. Over the past two decades, this commitment to CPD has spread beyond those affiliated to institutional bodies and is now embraced throughout all sectors.

What can you get CPD certified?

Continuing Professional Development certification covers a whole range of different learning methods. Our Assessments team review thousands of CPD training courses, workshops, seminars conferences and events every year.

Training Courses

CPD training courses are the most well-known method of completing Continuing Professional Development. They vary in length and will often be specific to one subject or offer skills in a particular area of an industry

Seminars

Seminars are a type of short course and are typically a few hours long, but sometimes last up to one day. CPD seminars provide an opportunity to focus on a particular subject matter in detail they are usually conducted in group settings with interactive discussion allowing individuals to contribute, which can lead to a better retention of knowledge.

Workshops

CPD workshops are interactive educational group sessions which are similar to seminars but with a few differences. CPD workshops are less theoretical and tend to offer a more hands-on, practical skills approach to learning.

Webinars

Webinars are a method of online learning which is held virtually and attended by an online audience. Often, the main objective of a CPD webinar is to educate and inform professionals in a short and concise manner about new and relevant information.

Events

There are a number of different forms of learning that can be considered a CPD event. CPD events include conferences held at venues, often with keynote sessions and breakout learning by topic. Seminars and workshops may also feature as part of wider CPD events.

Online Courses

Online CPD courses are an increasingly popular method of learning that offer convenience and affordability. As in-person event and course materials can be shared free online, there is no need to attend.
