    This course gives an understanding how autism is defined in law; described by autistic people and defined by clinicians; understanding why some autistic people may become involved in criminality; either as a victim or perpetrator. This course also looks at why someone on the autism spectrum might be vulnerable in police settings and identifying ways of supporting an individual on the autism spectrum both within the community and at the police station.

  • Safeguarding Children on the Autism Spectrum

    This course gives an understanding of how autism is defined and what this means in the context of legislative framework for safeguarding children; identifying safeguarding issues in children and young people with autism and what to do if you have concerns about a child; either as a victim or perpetrator. This course also looks at how to better communicate with children with autism and strategies for managing behaviour and restraint.

    This one day course aims to develop delegates understanding of autism and provide them with an introduction to the SPELL framework. SPELL is a framework for understanding and responding to the needs of children and adults on the autism spectrum developed through evidence-based practice. The framework is useful in identifying underlying issues; reducing the disabling effects of the condition and providing a cornerstone for communication.

    This course explores stress and anxiety; how it affects children and adults on the autism spectrum and the impact on behaviour. The course uses the SPELL framework as a framework for understanding of behaviour; and discusses strategies for supporting people with; what potentially is behaviour that challenges.

    This course looks at the key areas of difference in autism; discussing diagnosis; the impact of autism on individuals and families; autism in maturity; etc. Key legislation is also discussed. The day will focus on using the SPELL framework to prepare for and carry out social care assessments that are sensitive to the needs of people with autism.
