It is vital that hyperglycaemia is screened for in every woman in pregnancy; through oral glucose tolerance testing and individual consideration of risk factors for the condition. In developing world and/or marginalized community-based populations; optimum screening strategies are unclear. Consequently; there are unmet needs in real-world clinical care relating to awareness and implementation of guidelines for gestational diabetes screening and management. Follow-up screening of women with history of gestational diabetes is necessary to ensure timely identification of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes in these high-risk individuals.
