Belonging in the workplace matters

Creating a sense of belonging in the workplace is more important that ever. Employees who feel they belong are more likely to be engaged, productive and loyal. Research has shown that a perceived sense of belonging acts as a predictor of motivation, engagement and performance. Feeling valued as a team-member who is recognised and appreciated goes a long way and research has shown that a sense of belonging is the second most important factor in employee retention.

Fostering a “rise and fall’ together approach rather than a competitive ‘dog eat dog’ environment means that work loads are more likely to be shared out equally and transparently, with employees feeling less isolated or ‘put upon’. Ultimately, this sense of belonging can help to reduce workplace stress and anxiety, with staff looking forward to coming in to a supportive and collaborative environment.

Here's some things to bear in mind:

1. Foster an inclusive culture: Make sure everyone feels included and can access everything regardless of their race, gender, ability. This may mean changing the layout of the office, using larger fonts on notices, paying attention to prayer times or religious festivals. Encourage open communication and active participation from everyone.

2. Recognise everyone’s contributions: Make a point of public praise for things (this also stops people taking credit for others work as they are more likely to be called out!). Gratitude goes a long way in the workplace.

Ways to foster belonging in the workplace

3. Encourage employees to pursue their own interests and provide training, mentoring or coaching where appropriate: Developing a ‘life-long learning’ approach in your workplace aids staff motivation and prevents stagnancy. Make sure there are ample opportunities for people to cascade what they have learned. ‘Brown bag discussion lunches’ and ‘knowledge exchange’ forums are a great way to ensure everyone is brought in.

Learning alongside peers ultimately reduces anxiety, generates ideas, and clarifies aspirations. Being able to learn effectively together can help going forward into the world of work as being able to develop and share insight is a skill they will need to possess. These do not have to be directly related to your core business either – encouraging a range of activities, perspectives and approaches will help foster creativity and communication in your workplace.

4. Leadership style - in schools, research indicates that the perceived organisation of the teacher impacts upon a student's sense of belonging and the same would appear to translate into the workplace. The person in charge needs to lead by example, showing that things like timeliness, work-life balance, continual learning and personal critical reflection, do matter. This will then create a sense of a team employees want to belong to.

Community and collaboration

Clearly balancing employee autonomy with a sense of community and collaboration is key. Doing everything in a group is not always preferable. But, developing a sense of belonging in the workplace will help you nurture an engaged, creative and committed staff body. You will find they will remain supportive and loyal to one another and ultimately you will have made work a better place.
