This informal CPD article ‘Challenges faced by ESL teachers - and how to overcome them’, was provided by Max Azarov, co-founder and CEO of Novakid, an international community of young English learners, designed to boost English learning at schools by giving kids a safe place for real-life English practice with other kids and teachers from all over the world.

Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) is a rewarding profession. Interacting with students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds lends itself to wonderful and fulfilling engagement between teacher and student, but also provides its own fair share of challenges. But, with appropriate strategies and the support some online schools provide, these can be overcome.

Language barriers, cultural diversity and varying levels of proficiency

The most immediate and apparent challenge is the one posed by the language barrier. Students may struggle to understand instructions, communicate their needs, and express themselves adequately in English. This can be overcome using simple language, visuals and gestures. Breaking complex concepts down into simple components and using repetition to reinforce them is also an effective tool.

ESL students come from diverse cultural backgrounds, which can influence their approach to learning, classroom behavior, and communication styles. Teachers may face challenges in understanding these differences and in creating an inclusive environment. To create this, teachers can learn about students’ cultures to avoid misunderstandings and integrate culturally diverse materials into the lesson plans.

When it comes to group classes, ESL teachers may have students with different proficiency levels, making it difficult to prepare lessons that are appropriate for all students. This can be by adapting tasks to meet the students' different levels to ensure that all benefit from the learning experience.

Limited Resources and technical difficulties

Many ESL teachers face a lack of appropriate resources such as textbooks, technology, or supplementary materials that could enhance their teaching. But, there are online platforms that offer a wide variety of resources and technical support that make the teaching experience more interesting and engaging for students. Teachers are encouraged to seek out platforms that are designed to be intuitive, allowing teachers to focus on teaching rather than technical issues.

There are also platforms that offer teachers a comprehensive curriculum that includes interactive lesson plans and activities. These materials are designed to engage children and align with various language learning objectives, such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Interactive tools can also be accessed on certain teaching platforms, these include digital tools for teaching such as whiteboard tools to illustrate lessons, visual aids and multimedia resources (videos, pictures, sounds) to make lessons more engaging as well as flashcards and other interactive elements to reinforce vocabulary and concepts.

Online teaching platforms can also offer teachers access to a library of pre-made materials that include worksheets, activity sheets, games, and quizzes, which help make lessons more diverse and interactive.

Keeping students motivated and time constraints

For most online students, learning English as a second language can be a taxing experience and they may lose motivation, for many teachers keeping them engaged can be challenging.

Teachers can assist the students through these learning slumps by setting clear achievable goals that allow them to see visible progress. They can also incorporate interactive activities such as games, role-plays, or project-based learning that make language learning enjoyable and relevant to their lives. And finally, providing positive reinforcement where a students’ success is celebrated, no matter how small, encourages improvement and confidence.

ESL teachers often have limited time to cover large amounts of material, which can create stress for both teachers and students. This can be mitigated by prioritising key concepts and focusing on the most essential language skills and structures that students will use frequently.

A feeling of isolation

Many only teachers may feel isolated and find it challenging to stay positive and motivated. More credible online learning platforms provide an online community for teachers to interact with one another. This could include forums, chat groups, and social media platforms where teachers can share experiences, challenges, and tips. Connecting with colleagues who are in similar situations can help alleviate feelings of isolation.

These platforms also organise webinars, workshops, and virtual meetups that focus on teaching techniques, platform updates, and professional development. These events also provide opportunities for teachers to connect and discuss common challenges, offering a sense of belonging and support.

For teachers who need additional support, platforms can also offer one-on-one feedback and mentorship opportunities. This can provide personal guidance and encouragement, helping teachers feel more connected and supported.

ESL teaching is undoubtedly challenging but also incredibly rewarding. By being proactive in addressing these challenges—whether through differentiated instruction, fostering an inclusive environment, or using a platform that provides resources effectively—teachers can overcome these challenges and continue to create a supportive and enriching learning experience for their students.
